
Defensive Tactics for Aggressive/Combative Subjects
Overview
Whether working a patrol assignment or performing a SWAT mission, police officers need to be proficient in unarmed arrest and control tactics. The UMAA’s Defensive Tactics program addresses appropriate responses during unarmed physical confrontations with aggressive/combative subjects – including take-downs, ground fighting and strikes.A special emphasis is placed on ground fighting skills in this course because more than half of all suspect/police officer altercations end up on the ground. Additionally, officers will be trained in the mental skills that are necessary for a more complete understanding of the following areas of defensive tactics:
This course also covers room-entry drills for confronting unarmed, combative subjects. Students will apply these skills in reality-based, hands-on training scenarios.
All techniques will flow naturally into a handcuffing position. Students will learn to apply appropriate physical techniques with control and proper form. Drills will be performed with a partner and against a live attack from a padded assailant.

Officers will enhance their readiness and competence during unarmed physical confrontations, upon completion of this course, regardless of their level of experience in defensive tactics. Note: This is a physically demanding course. Participants should be in good physical condition.
This course is designed for law enforcement personnel who may need to use reasonable and necessary physical force to defend themselves and/or control an aggressive, combative subject(s). The focus will be appropriate physical techniques that can be applied in a “use-of-force” situation on an unarmed combatant. Practical applications will consist of:
This course will not cover the use of chemical sprays, baton techniques or other less-lethal devices.
Ground Fighting Techniques for Law Enforcement
This course will give law enforcement officers a good foundation and working knowledge of techniques for prevailing in an altercation that ends up on the ground. The techniques taught in this program include:
